Common in food and skincare, Sodium Benzoate...all natural, safe? Or not?

April 14, 2016 2 min read

Sodium benzoate is a synthetic chemical produced when benzoic acid, which is found naturally in some fruits and spices, is combined with sodium hydroxide. Since sodium benzoate contains a natural ingredient, it is probably safe, right? Isn’t that the meaning of Natural? After all, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Canadian Health Protection Branch have pronounced this chemical preservative to be acceptable when consumed in low amounts.  Wait, what does THAT mean?

The actual truth is that the FDA has granted sodium benzoate GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status, and their “safe” limit in food is 0.1 percent by weight. In water, the acceptable “safe” limit, set by the EPA is 5 parts per billion (ppb). Sodium Benzoate is a common food additive. It’s found in carbonated sodas, fruit juices, salad dressings, skin care, as well as, fermented foods like vinegars, wine, and pickles.

Sodium benzoate is a sodium salt that is occurs naturally in very low levels in berries, apples, plums, cinnamon, and several other natural foods. Since it is in natural in these forms, there is nothing unnatural about it. This is the big difference to us....the Sodium benzoate used in skincare, and as food additives with the “all Natural” label is label, synthesized sodium benzoate. It is a close relative to benzoic acid.

This is a game changer. When these preservatives are added to foods and to the interior of metal cans that contain beverages or liquid foods, they can have a detrimental effect on your health. Yuck!

Most people get scared when finally understanding that the “all natural” claim, whether it be on a food or skin care label, means nothing.  We think it’s exciting to take control of what you put in your body, on your skin and for what you decide to dole out your cash.

Any questions?  Just ask. We love to spread information and let people have a choice in what they want.  Be Well!
